Welcome to NBA Narratives for March 7th! Tonight we have a small 3 game slate, but there are a few narratives worth knowing as you set your lineups. We have an NBA Birthday for a player I never knew existed, some revenge, and one of the greatest of all time chasing history. Let’s take a stroll down #NarrativeStreet ….
Happy Birthday to Jake “Sunshine” Layman! Jake is a real person, his nickname is actually Sunshine, and he plays for the Portland Trailblazers! Who knew?
Also, happy birthday to Ian Clark and to Jeff Withey (neither on slate)!
Markieff Morris travels to Talking Stick Resort Arena (Really!) to take on his former teammates in Phoenix. Before the Suns and Markieff parted ways, there were a rough couple of months, and I wouldn’t be shocked if Markieff comes out with a little extra effort against his former team and former fans.
Jared Dudley is on the slate, so he’s playing one of his 137 former teams! This time it’s Washington.
Corey Brewer, now with the Lakers, takes on Dallas who he played a short partial season for in 2010 / 2011. Interestingly enough, BasketballReference.com lists Brewer’s nickname as “The Drunken Dribbler”. I would love to know the story behind that one.
Phoenix is giving away Maracas to the first 6000 fans!
My favorite narrative of the night. At home, Dirk Nowitzki takes the floor 20 points shy of joining the ultra-exclusive 30,000 point club. Kareem, The Mailman, Jordan, Kobe, Wilt, and Dr. J are the 6 current members of the club. While Dirk has started slowing down, his career can’t be overstated. He changed how we view international players forever, and it’s because of him that you see so many unknown international players taken highly each year in the NBA Draft. Dirk has been a 13x all star, 12x all-NBA, won the 2011 NBA Championship against the “Heatles”, won an NBA Finals MVP and also an NBA regular season MVP. He even won a 3 point contest! Dirk will finish his career as one of the greatest power forwards of all time.
Dirk, when asked about his chances of scoring at least 20 tonight:
